Whole day NQT Primary Conference, ‘Teaching Talk, Pupil Talk, Thinking Talk’ on Thursday 21st May 2020. This conference will support NQTs to develop the quality of talk in their classrooms so that the learning is more effective. The conference will be opened with a keynote from the highly acclaimed Professor Neil Mercer (Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Cambridge, and Director of the Study Centre, Oracy Cambridge, The Hughes Hall Centre for Effective Spoken Communication) sharing his research findings on the role of language in the classroom and the development of children’s thinking.
The theoretical themes of his keynote will be followed by practical workshops from Neil Mercer, and his colleague, Dr James Mannion and experienced school leaders and consultants with a focus on related topics such as ‘Coding Children’s Language’, ‘Talk for SEND’, ‘Talk for EYFS’ and ‘Voice Techniques’. Throughout the day the NQTs will have the opportunity to explore evidence informed approaches to the development of classroom talk shown to improve children's skills in communicating, learning and reasoning.
The conference will support NQTs’ ability to harness the power of talk to stimulate pupil’s thinking and advance their understanding. The workshops will share repertoires of interactive skills and techniques on which the NQTs can draw flexibly and creatively, but also in a principled way, according to purpose context and needs.
